The African American Heritage Society of Western Maryland
is a non-profit membership organization that promotes African
American historical, educational and cultural activities.
Although the organization is physically located in Cumberland,
Maryland, it serves the greater Western Maryland Region,
as well as the surrounding
West Virginia and Pennsylvania counties.
The
Society is managed by a seven member Board of Directors.
Additionally, volunteers are continually recruited to assist
with the implementation of a wide variety of programs. Small
group programs are held at AAHS, while other programs that
are AAHS sponsored will be held at other sites throughout
the community. Membership is open to any individual, company,
educational institutions, churches or anyone interested in
the organization.
Le
Soleil Noir (the black sun) is the logo of the African American
Heritage Society. It represents the warmth of the people
and the brilliance of the culture.
The
new Society building is warm and inviting, the exhibits are interesting and each have their own story. David
Cox of Cumberland did the renovations while Leontyne
Peck and her daughter Alexis Peck did most of the collecting
of display items, setting up and designing the furnishings
and displays.
CAFE 7
Cafe
7, a cozy corner of the museum opening this summer, where
members can enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee and a warm
pastry and can browse through a wide variety of African American
inspired magazines (everything from Oprah Magazine to Black
Hairstyles). Seven is the perfect number and Cafe 7 is a perfect
little place to simply relax. Have you noticed that Africa
is shaped like the number seven? The African American Society
is a great place to feed the mind, body and spirit.
The
Museum also has a small gift shop that sells African American inspired memorabilia as well as AAHS T-shirts
and gifts.
The
Museum, Cafe and gift shops are open Monday through Saturday
from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and some Sundays and evenings
for special occasions. Special tours can be arranged for off
hours by calling 301-777-7785 or visit us at www.aahs.net
